S/S’12 Fashion Trends: Spring Spikes

in Fashion Trends, How To Wear

The tough adornment that is spikes continues to be a fashion favourite for spring/summer 2012 – much to my spike-loving delight :) !! As someone who’s had a spike labret for the best part of 8 years, an accessory that has unintentionally become somewhat of signature feature (though truth be told, I would’ve liked to have removed it some years ago in favour of cheek piercings but what with my boyfriend’s disapproval, this hasn’t as yet occurred, though my powers of persuasion are gradually winning him over haha! But with this recent spike trend, I’m happy to hold on to it a bit longer!) I’m pleased though that I can now extend my love of spikes to all manner of wear, not just my piercings.

Be it studded denim or leather, industrial feel jewellery, spike shoes and bags, statement spike collars - you name it, it’s no-doubt had a fierce revamp for spring! As mentioned in a previous post, I’m eager to get started on some DIY spike embellishing, namely denim shirts and shorts, collars and shoulders of pretty shirts… I don’t think much will escape the custom spike embellishment once I’ve got started! (pics to follow…).

Here’s some ways to wear spikes….

Spikes, spikes, spikes!! I love all these ideas on how to wear spikes (via my spike board on Pinterest) none more so than the cool spike spine on the denim jacket – genius! Closely followed by the spike crowded denim shorts and the lovely contrast of spike hardware shoulders on a delicate chiffon floral blouse.

Here working great with the highly covetable Jeffrey Campbell Lita spike platform boots

Topshop spike ring

This Topshop spike ring is currently my favourite and gets many compliments. I love that it’s understated, and is to be honest, a far more suitable spike ring for someone like me who is terribly clumsy and would be likely to lose an eye were I to wear a more statement style spike cluster ring as I have been previously tempted to buy!

Not only do I love this cool spike studded denim shirt, but I’m in total envy of this girl’s pastel ombre hair too!!

I just had to have these ASOS spike earrings in all 3 colours!! – black, silver and gold – black generally being my colour of choice to wear. I reckon they are the best examples I’ve seen of faux tapers and do, to most people, look like the real thing which is ideal.

Zara studded collar shirts
Zara have a brilliant selection this season of spike embellished shirts, in particular this owl printed shirt with gold studded collar and my colour crush of the moment – pastel mint silk shirt with applique on collarI really like the placement of spikes on this studded denim shirt, but I don’t think I would wear white denim tbh, would instead prefer the fabric to be simply white cotton or luxe feel silk.

I tend to prefer looks that are more understated and so I definitely prefer this lighter version Jeffrey Campbell bone suede Lita spike boots; I think the subtle contrast of soft muted grey-white leather with silver spikes as opposed to the stark contrast of black works so much better. In my opinon too, spikes and leopard can only ever work brilliantly – this UNIF faux suede leo spiked Moto jacket being a great example! I like too a chunky wooden platform on a shoe, especially when it features a triangle cut out as seen on these Jeffrey Campbell Dominique spike platforms.
